About the administration

The Federal Court of Australia (the Entity) is a combined Courts Agency established under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act). The Entity has been established as a non-corporate Commonwealth entity under the PGPA Act to manage the operations of the Federal Court of Australia (FCA), Family Court of Australia (FCoA), the Federal Circuit Court of Australia (FCC) and the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT). The FCA, FCoA and FCC are Chapter III Courts under the Australian Constitution and continue to operate as individual judicial jurisdictions.

Employees of the Federal Court are covered by the Federal Court of Australia Enterprise Agreement 2018–2021.

  • Citizenship: It is government policy that employees of the Australian Public Service are generally required to be Australian citizens.  However, if you are not an Australian citizen you may be considered for engagement on probation pending granting of citizenship within a time frame prescribed by the Courts.  Your engagement may be terminated if you fail to satisfy the citizenship requirement within that time.
  • Character Requirements: All new employees to the Courts are required to complete a form that will be sent to the Australian Federal Police for a criminal history record check.
  • Formal Qualifications: All new employees must provide certified evidence of any formal qualifications they have claimed to have attained, relevant to their position.
  • Health Clearances: New employees may be required to undergo a health clearance before confirmation of engagement is provided. 
  • Probation: If you are successful in obtaining employment with the Courts, you will be engaged on probation during which time your conduct and work performance will be assessed to determine your suitability for the engagement.  Engagement as an employee of the Courts is subject to satisfactory completion of the probation period.

Personal Development Scheme

The Courts’ Performance Development System (PDS) aims to foster a high performance culture by emphasising the personal and career development of staff.  It also provides alignment between the Courts’ goals, individual skills, responsibilities and performance. All staff are required to participate in the PDS process.

Recipients of a VR package from the APS

Former members of the APS who accepted a voluntary redundancy benefit from the APS are ineligible to be engaged by the Courts before the completion of their redundancy arrangement period.

  2. Responses to the selection criteria or expression of interest noting any word limits. (We recommend completing your selection criteria responses or expression of interest in a word document first, then copy and paste these into the relevant boxes).

  3. A copy of any relevant qualifications.

On submission, an email confirmation will be sent to you acknowledging receipt of your application.

  • Late or incomplete applications and expressions of interest will not be accepted without prior approval.

The Selection Process

All selections within the Courts are based on the principle of merit.

A basic outline of the selection process is:

  1. Applicant applies for position

  2. The position closes

  3. The Selection panel assesses applications and short-lists

  4. Interviews are arranged (please note some recruitment actions are finalised without proceeding to interviews and therefore it is in your best interests to provide a comprehensive application)

  5. The selection panel discusses the interviewees and contacts referees

  6. The selection panel completes the selection report

  7. The selection panel chairperson makes an offer to the successful applicant.

The Court will notify all applicants of an outcome of their application. Generally, Human Resources will advise those who were unsuccessful, and the panel will advise the interviewees. All interviewees can request feedback on their performance from the Chairperson of the Committee.
