On Tuesday 3 May 2011 Chief Federal Magistrate John Pascoe, along with other judicial officers and representatives from the legal community, will welcome former barrister Garry Foster as Newcastle's newest Federal Magistrate.
"I am delighted that the Government has made this appointment and I sincerely welcome Federal Magistrate Foster to the Court," Chief Federal Magistrate John Pascoe said.
When the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia commenced in 2000, there was only one Federal Magistrate appointed to Newcastle. Today there are three Federal Magistrates based in Newcastle, along with two Family Court Judges.
"The Newcastle registry of the Federal Magistrates Court is one of the busiest in the country," Chief Federal Magistrate Pascoe said. "Federal Magistrate Foster's extensive experience in family law will be of benefit in the efficient disposition of the work of the Court."
Federal Magistrate Foster holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney and was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1974. From 1974 to 2000, he practiced as a solicitor at Kogarah in Sydney and was an Accredited Family Law Specialist.
In 2001 Federal Magistrate Foster was called to the New South Wales Bar and has since appeared extensively in family law and defacto relationship matters, specialising in property and children related trial work including parenting, relocation, child abuse and child support.
In addition to his 37 years experience of legal practice, Federal Magistrate Foster brings to his new position a great depth of experience and knowledge drawn from the many professional memberships which he has held, including membership of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia.
"I am very honoured to have been appointed to the Federal Magistrates Court and I am looking forward to what will no doubt be a challenging but rewarding job," Federal Magistrate Foster said.
Federal Magistrate Foster officially commenced on 18 April 2011, and replaces Federal Magistrate Lapthorn, who has transferred to Brisbane.
The official welcome will take place at the Federal Magistrates Court, 61 Bolton St, Newcastle at 9.30am on Tuesday 3 May 2011.
